If you are job hunting the holidays are a great time to meet new people and expand your network. But don’t just go to a party because you think you will have fun, or the food will be great, or there is live music. Make intelligent choices for your holiday networking.
1. Pick and choose event that has people are in the field you are targeting. So look for the professional society for your field and find out when they have their holiday party. You do want to meet more people in your chosen field, whether it be marketing, law, association management, or finance or anything else.
2. Prepare your pitch: You should have a 30 second, 60 second and a two minute pitch, to use depending upon the situation. Include what you do, one or two of your accomplishments and what you are looking for.
3. Bring business cards – As you meet peopel and exchange pleasantries, do exchange business cards so you can follow up later for a one-to-one meeting, doffee or lunch. When you leave the event write down some notes on the back fo the business card to remember where and when you met and one or two facts about the person.
4. Follow up afterwards with an email to arrange for a face-to-face meeting or coffee. Even if you just met briefly during the event, say you will follow up to set up a face-to-face meeting.
5. Not comfortable going into a room full of strangers? Go with a friend if you feel too nervous. A wingman (or woman) who is a little more extroverted will help pull you in to conversations.
